The 14th Annual IMPACCT Real-World Evidence Summit returns to Boston October 27 to 29, and Novellia will be there with a featured session, a booth, and a poster. On Thursday, October 29 at 11:30 AM ET, Novellia Co-Founder and CEO Shashi Shankar and Cait Williamson, Director, Real-World Evidence Solutions, will present "Tokenize, Model, Govern: Every RWE Fix Inherits the Same Issues."

The Tools Are Better Than Ever, and Reviewers Still Have Doubts

RWE teams have more capability today than at any point in the field's history. Tokenization links records across datasets and vendors. AI reads clinical notes at scale. Governance frameworks bring structure and rigor to validation and review. This year's IMPACCT agenda reflects how much the industry has invested in each.

RWE still meets resistance at regulatory, HTA, and payer review. Many sessions at this year's summit address that gap, each from a different angle.

Institutional Data Carries Institutional Blind Spots

Shashi and Cait's session traces those credibility gaps to a common starting point. Every major source of real-world data originates inside an institution, and it carries that institution's purpose. Claims were built to settle payment. EHRs were built to run a clinic. Each system records the slice of care it touches.

Patients move across those boundaries constantly. They switch insurers, see specialists in other networks, stop therapies for reasons documented in another clinic's notes, and live with symptoms between visits. When a dataset observes part of that journey, treatment sequences get miscounted, switching reasons go unrecorded, and effectiveness estimates drift toward patients who stayed within one system.

Tokenization, AI, and governance all operate on data after an institution has recorded it. Each one grows stronger when it works from a more complete source.

The Patient Is the One Place Where All Care Converges

During his decade at Genentech and Roche, Shashi watched a pattern repeat. When evidence fell short, the industry's answer was often another layer of investment in new tools. He also saw the one place where every data point in a patient's care converges. The patient sees every provider, pharmacy, and insurer.

Clinical trials already work this way. When a sponsor needs a complete picture, it follows the patient. The 21st Century Cures Act now gives patients the right to access their health records and authorize their use across every provider they have seen. Paired with patients' own reported experience, that creates a record anchored to the person living the journey.

Cait brings the data perspective, shaped by her work at Flatiron Health. She will compare the same patient journey as recorded through claims, through a single health system, and through a patient-anchored Novellia record, with data completeness metrics for each. The result is a full view of treatment sequences across providers, the clinician's documented reason for each switch, and the patient's account of symptoms and burden. Patients, in turn, see their participation shape evidence for others living with the same condition.

What attendees will take away

  • A clear view of how tokenization, AI, and governance each operate downstream of institutional data capture, and which evidence gaps carry through all three
  • How patient-anchored data is captured and how it come provide the clearest view of the patient journey.
  • A side-by-side comparison of treatments and outcomes for the same patient journeys across data sources

Shashi and Cait will also speak candidly about what makes this approach hard. Patients share their records when they receive real value in return, so trust has to be earned continuously. Records arrive in every format, which calls for validated AI with human review. Industry procurement, SOPs, and validation frameworks were designed around licensed institutional data.
